Surfing on snow in *FF*

The FREE FOOT project began with the desire to "surf even on snow," and it was launched with the goal of developing bindings that would allow for the same movements as surfing in powder riding.


The FF model was born from repeated prototyping by professional surfers, including world-renowned surfboard builder Tappy (Takuya Yoshikawa), Katsunori Ito, and Akira Shindo, along with FLUX pro snowboarders Yusuke Toyoma and Tomohide Inoue.

The challenges were to achieve the range of motion required to reproduce surfing movements on snow, the minimum necessary support for snowboarding, and durability.



The FF uses the softest materials in FLUX history for each major component, but selecting these materials was a very difficult point.

If it was too soft, it wouldn't function as a snowboard, and there were concerns about durability. We considered the differences between surfing and snowboarding, and after much trial and error with movements we wanted to do on snow and movements only possible on snow, this exquisite balance was achieved.

 

When it comes to the FF's features, the first thing that stands out in terms of softness is definitely the highback.

Many people may be intrigued, but also concerned, by the unprecedented level of flexibility.

Urethane is used for the highback.

This material offers an excellent balance of flexibility and durability, and FLUX has adopted a highly reliable special urethane that has been used for over a decade.

It's so soft that some might think a highback isn't even necessary, but thanks to the curved shape of the highback, the blue part in the image above still provides support.

Therefore, it's a highback that achieves the support and freedom of a lowback.

Furthermore, lowbacks tend to have the upper part of the highback dig into boots easily, causing damage to the boots, but by using a soft material in the shape of a normal highback, a seamless riding experience can be achieved without a boundary.

 

Also, while the highback tends to draw attention, the baseplate actually uses a much softer material than conventional models. This softness of the base is a major factor in bringing about unprecedented movement.

Furthermore, by using the same material for the disc plate as for this base plate, the entire base twists, achieving a freer feeling.

 

Compared to conventional bindings, the FF minimizes the support needed for snowboarding.
That's why it challenges whether you are truly riding on a single board.
Are you positioned in the most balanced spot that the board demands?
It's a binding that tests the rider themselves.

You might not be able to ride it well at first.
However, once you master riding with these bindings, the sense of unity between you and your snowboard will be unlike anything you've ever felt before.
